The highest ideal in all the aims of the human race - the pursuit of freedom.

you hear it everywhere:
"freedom of speech"
"freedom of actions (privacy)"
"freedom of ideals"

but have you ever asked yourself why this notion of freedom is so successful in the human race?

first of all, psychology parallels the ideas of the Darwinian Theory of Evolution, or the process of Natural Selection. simply put, it is the survival of the fittest, or in the case of human traits, the survival of the most popular and most socially accepted.

so why is the desire and longing for freedom such a socially accepted trait?

in my opinion, it is because freedom is a transformed state of our basic desire for more power. if you think about what freedom wants, it is absolute power to self, with no other control over all aspects of the person. take for example, freedom of speech. as a description, it is basically the pursuit of the removal of all forms of censorship and control over the speech of the person, allowing the person to express his/her opinions fully, and without obligations to restrain. in another light, freedom of speech is giving a person power to say and share whatever he likes with the society without any consideration of social responsibility. there is no doubt that this is a selfish notion from the granting of self -satisfation from expression. it also can be seen from other forms of desired freedom that there is always a selfish ulterior motive that drives it and fuels it, sometimes into a lifelong obsession (or passion as regarded by some).

and at this point, some people would argue that humans are beyond a level of animals that allows us to think critically. Right, but a the same time, wrong. Yes, we have been blessed with the capability of higher order thinking. but deep down inside us, there is a large extent of animal instincts that drives what we do. a good example of this is the economy. the economy is BASED on the assumption that people are all working selfishly and in their own interests, leading to a system of monetary acquisition and trading.

now that 'freedom' has been taken apart, allow me to show you the ultimate freedom. to the 'freedom fighter', the ultimate freedom is the removal of governance, or the state of anarchy, whereby it is believed that people would latch onto a system of nature and living that would enable them to survive. based on the economy model, everyone acting selfishly.

but you see, the failure of the anarchy model is that it does not take into account the effects of Darwinian Theory of Evolution in the context of psychology.

another well known trait of humans is the desire for more power, after the desire for freedom (its a progressive thing, leading from breaking the chains, to becoming the person who holds the key to unlocking the chains that bind others). and this, in an anarchic state, would lead to power struggles and the emergence of leaders etc. referring back to the times of the Warring States (China) and the Shogun Wars (Japan), the power struggle would eventually (sooner or later) be unified under a single ruler ie Emperor.

and with the emperor will come an order of things and ultimately a government.

makes the reasoning behind anarchy quite useless isnt it? lol. its just going to go one BIG cycle and no ones ever going to hit a permanent status quo.

and the reason?

human nature and its failures and weaknesses

now the second reason why a state of anarchy will fall is more abstract.

heres the breakdown of why:

- the theory is that people in a society originally have no common place, no common ground. however, under a form of "suppression" they have common ground - the common fight for the elusive and imaginary state of complete freedom from the reign.

- now what an anarchy strives to do is rid of that and throw humans back into a pre-government era whereby people live by selfish motives alone and on the assumption that that is enough to bring about some sort of order.

-however, the failure comes here: without a common ground of society to rebel against a cause, to stand up as one for a cause that they all believe in, then they would have no inclinations or no voluntary association to one another under a common ground.

-thus at this point, society as a whole is going to breakdown into one big mass of people acting individually, rather than collectively. and in other words,

SOCIETY BREAKS DOWN

so to sum up, i think freedom is always a high ideal that we all hope to strive for. but it is, always will be, and should stay as an elusive imaginary ideal which will set the hearts of people on fire in the pursuit of it. and through this, will unify society into a whole. therefore in my opinion, no government should ever succumb to a state of total or even minimal freedom for the good of the citizens.

another concluding point is that we all may be chasing freedom, but we all have to be conscious that this pursuit is nothing more than a form of our basic instincts translating into a desire for more personal power, a selfish aim rather than one for the greater good. and it has been proven time and again through the ages, that feeding and fuelling your instincts with power will have no good come out of it unless there is a conscious control and increased maturity in the handling of the power that is given. and the acceptance that as much as there will always be a desire and public "outcry" for more, never expect it to be given, for the good of yourself.
