live it right.
the traffic in singapore is horrendous. there isnt another way to put it bluntly.
its like bad driving is a talent.
anyway.
after years of being in a state of literal hate for the singaporean system of education and work ethics, i'm starting to change my opinion.
but still, i cannot deny that it is an extremely rigid, and extremely compeitive system whereby survival of the best is a day to day occurance. everyone's trying to be the best, be it in terms of top scores in exams, to being the top sportsman, to being the top chao keng king. everyone's trying to be the best.
and when youre living in it, you think to yourself:
'this place sucks. everyone's so caught up in this big rat race, but for what? all thats going to come out of this is a stupid piece of paper and some title. its not happiness, theres no freedom, flexibility and room for creativity.'
but truth be told, when you sit down and think about it, this system is the one that will allow you to survive. be it here, or anywhere in the world. its because the harsh truth of the open world is that everything is about climbing that bloody long corporate ladder, no matter how tired you are.
but why? isnt that too materialistic? money minded? arent your priorites messed up?
no.
let me give you a scenario. 30 years from now, when you have a wife and kids, and parents and parents-in-law to support, how are you going to do so? how are you going to tell your kids that you 'funned' yourself to death in school on the grounds that you were enjoying life - the modern day hippie- and now they've gotta suffer as a consequence of that?
when that day does come, regret is a feeling that will be long past its expiry date. and all you gotta hope for is that your kids don't make the same mistakes as you did.
everyone's so hyped up about 'money doesnt make the world go round' and 'money is the root of all evil' and other cute catch phrases bent on sending you to delirium thinking that life's one big party. the sad, but real truth is that money does make the world go round.
money = necessities = survival = family = happiness, in that order.
you dont see it when your life is nothing more than the school and home and orchard road. but when you start taking on more responsibilites and the realities of life come pounding on your door, you start to see the problem of: 1. living the high life early on 2. slacking off 3. chasing the illusion of freedom = ultimate happiness.
so stop living your dream and come back down and look at the realities that are facing you. its like tigers that are locked up in cages by your parents. once they let you into the world, there will be no one to keep those tigers locked up anymore. and they'll hit you sooner or later like hot coffee in your face on a monday.
not nice.
just get that damned cert over and done with, and your life is going to start good and proper once u know that your future, and the future of your family is secure. now THATS happiness.
